An excerpt from the Prelude:
Love at First Sight
For me, life has been a series of events meant to prove,
despite much evidence to the contrary, we walk through this life in the
protection of an invisible force that shines its Light on us at unexpected
times and in unexpected ways. This Light draws us close to that thin place
where the veil between the Holy and the everyday is lifted. Where Heaven
invades earthly reality and our existence is altered forever.
The Light may bring us hope during a dark time and show us a
new path. It may bring comfort at a time of grief. Or the Light may want to
offer a lesson we didn’t even know we needed to learn.
When I was three years old, I would climb up and perch in a
small mimosa tree in our front yard. I spent a lot of time in that tree, but I
was never alone. On most days large clouds entertained me with either a parade
of animals or sky flowers, or the clouds turned a dark, bilious green, warning
me to run for cover because a storm was rolling in.
Then there were the days when there were no clouds at all
and the sky was a white-hot blue. Those were the days when a miraculous Light appeared
and swaddled me in its care and comfort.
It was love at first sight.
Even when the Light chose to remain invisible to my eye, I
knew it was there by the safety I felt. There was no worry the Light couldn’t
take away. I could tell it the good and bad of me without fear. The Light’s
only purpose was to be my friend.
When I grew too big to sit on the tiny branches in that
small tree I also thought I was too big to need my friend. I was wrong. As you
will see in these stories, through good and bad, the Light keeps showing up
when I need it most. It is my friend for life. One constantly offering hope and
renewal.
What This Book Is Not
Inside the Light isn't
a self-help book meant to reveal the core competencies you need to bring
moments of Light into your life. As far as I can tell, the Light has a mind of
its own and holds to its own timetable. Just as there is a peace that is beyond
our understanding, there is also a wisdom that transcends our human capacity to
see what we truly most need and when we need it. As I amble and stumble
through the foibles of my life, the Light finds me, not the other way around.
And, while it’s stepped in when I needed divine intervention or given me
living, breathing examples of the truths I need to learn about life, the Light
has never given away the secret of how it works or decides when it will show up
in my life.
What This Book Is
Inside the Light is
meant to let you know that, gloriously, you don’t have to break into an exotic
mystical chant, crumple to your knees in supplication, put your last coin in
the tin of someone worse off than you, or promise to give up any of your nasty
habits to experience the Light. It’s not even necessary to forgive your parents
or siblings for all their transgressions against you, or yourself for the
misery you may have caused them. Certainly, there is no connection between the
money you have and the Light coming your way. The eight moments I write about
in Inside the Light happened when I
was both living large and when I was barely scraping by.
