Cock Fighting

     Warning: Disturbing Content...

Hundreds of fighting roosters were rescued in a raid according to the news presenter. The colorful, beautifully plumed birds scratched at the soft straw in their cages and quietly drank water. Cock fighting enthusiasts had razored off their magnificent crowns in preparation for the combat they'd been bred for. One of the rescuers admitted even though they'd never be put back into a pit of conflict and death again, there was little hope of a good future for these creatures bred to fight.

I thought back to a country trip I'd taken years earlier...

Two-sided, two-foot-high metal tents with poles in their centers covered a giant field beside the road a local resident and I drove down. Beautiful oaks shone in the summer sun and shaded a nearby barn and scattered houses.
     "What are those?"
"Those metal tents? Oh, it's where they tie the game cocks in the summer to bake their brains. Makes 'em meaner...better fighters."
